3D Printing Goes Boom
3D printing goes boom, literally. Not only is the additive manufacturing (AM) industry continuing to grow rapidly, in the case of Los Alamos National Labs in New Mexico, scientists are using fused deposition modeling and optically cured technology to 3D print explosives. Just when we thought we've heard it all, right?

The booming industry brought in $5.1 billion in 2015, which was a 25% growth since 2014, according to Wohlers Associates' most recent Wohlers Report. This is Wohlers' 21st annual report on AM and it included data from 80 experts in 33 countries. Wohlers reported growth in metal AM and the desktop 3D printer segments, in which 62 manufacturers sold industrial-grade AM systems (valued at more than $5,000), compared to 49 in 2014, and twice as many than sold industrial systems in 2011.

Impressive, huh? Well, so is the technology that is advancing including printers that 3D print electronics like the Voxel8. Also look at Optomec's Optomec LENS technology for 3D printed metals. Another notable advance is the new Stratasys ULTEM 9085 Aerospace grade filament material for meeting aerospace requirements for low-volume production.

This month's premier 3D printing event, RAPID, showcased all the latest and greatest AM tech. Put on by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), featuring more than 250 exhibitors at this year's 26th annual event.

One of the show stoppers at RAPID was the display of HP's Jet Fusion 3D printers, which finally surfaced since plans were announced in 2014. According to HP, these 3D printers were designed for model shops and service bureaus. The company also announced partnerships with Proto Labs, Nike, Shapeways, Materialise and others. The HP Jet Fusion 3D 4200 Printer starts at $155,000 and will be delivered in late 2016. The HP Jet Fusion 3D 3200 Printer is set to ship in 2017 and starts at $130,000. See our article, "Adding Innovation at RAPID 2016's Exhibitor Floor," to see who else caught our attention at RAPID.

ConnectPress would like to thank our sponsors for this Additive Manufacturing Spotlight, Makerbot and Proto Labs.
